This was the last message from Kira López, a 15-year-old Spanish teenager who took her own life on May 19, 2021, due to the bullying she received from her classmates at school in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain.
Ese día, la joven saltó a la hora de entrar a clase desde el octavo piso del edificio en el que vivía y cayó en el agujero de la escalera. Sus padres encontraron su cuerpo más tarde después de leer un mensaje de WhatsApp en el que se despedía de ellos y sus otros seres queridos.
Kira nació un 8 de enero de 2006, creció en Barcelona junto a sus padres María José y José Manuel López, y solía ser una nena inquieta y amigable. Sus familiares la recuerdan como “una niña muy amorosa” y que jugaba con todos los chicos que se encontraba, ya que no le resultaba difícil socializar.
En cuanto terminó el jardín y tuvo que empezar la primaria, sus papás la mandaron al colegio Pare Manyanet de Sant Andreu porque todas sus amigas iban a estudiar ahí, y como tenía un buen nivel académico, no vieron por qué no sería una buena opción para su hija.
Le cortaban el pelo a la fuerza:
El segundo año de Kira en el colegio comenzaron las agresiones: empezó a salir de la escuela con moretones en el cuerpo, el pelo cortado con tijeras y era amenazada constantemente por sus compañeros.
“Mañana te vas a morir porque te vamos a tirar por las escaleras”, le decían.
Según el testimonio de la familia López, los agresores siempre eran los mismos y los tenían identificados por nombre y apellido, porque Kira siempre los escribía en los cuadernos de la escuela. El acoso era visible y, a pesar de que sus papás reclamaban a los directivos que accionaran, siempre tuvieron la misma respuesta.
El colegio no hace nada para eliminar el bullying a Kira:
“Nos decían que no pasaba nada, que éramos sobreprotectores. Pasamos a ser los ‘padres molestos’ a ser de esos ‘padres que se quejan todo el tiempo’”, aseguró María José, la mamá de Kira.
Las autoridades del centro educativo continuaron con la misma actitud y corrieron el foco de la culpabilidad: “La escuela empezó a señalar que el problema era ella porque decían que no sabía solucionar, gestionar sus emociones y pararle el pie a los demás. Y mi hija llegó a creérselo”, explicó la madre.
El bullying a Kira se agrava:
Con los años y ya entrada en la adolescencia, Kira sufrió el acoso escolar más grave del colegio. En un trabajo práctico que Kira tuvo que hacer sobre el acoso escolar, decidió contar cómo su experiencia con el bullying la cambió por completo como persona.
Los padres de Kira pidieron explicaciones a las autoridades de la escuela, pero nunca obtuvieron una respuesta sobre los acosadores.
El bullying nunca se supera:
Uno de los párrafos de aquel informe decía:
“Nunca se superan por completo los efectos del acoso escolar, acaban dando forma a nuestra personalidad, son como cicatrices en nuestras almas. Los que hemos sido acosados siempre tememos que vuelva a pasar, el miedo dura para siempre aunque aprendamos a esconderlo”.
19 de mayo de 2021:
El 19 de mayo de 2021 la vida de los López cambió para siempre después de un mensaje de WhatsApp que Kira le envió a sus padres:
“Mami, papi, los quiero mucho. Sois los mejores y siento mucho haber hecho esto. Pero lo he hecho porque no soy suficiente y nunca lo seré, y no vale la pena vivir. Baja para saber a lo que me refiero. Dile al resto de la familia y a mis amigos de parte mía que los quiero mucho”.
Más tarde, José Manuel López encontró el cuerpo de su hija en el fondo de la escalera del edificio en el que vivían. En un principio, la primera hipótesis que conjeturó fue que alguien la había empujado, pero no se imaginaba que todo el dolor con el que cargaba su hija desde que era una nena, la habría hecho tomar esa drástica decisión.
¿Por qué?
Entre la angustia y la conmoción, ambos padres empezaron a buscar el “por qué” y decidieron revisar sus dispositivos electrónicos, cajones, cuadernos y cualquier cosa que les diera una pista. Y al noveno día, cuando ya estaban a punto de abandonar cualquier tipo de esperanza, descubrieron algo que los hizo “atar cabos”: era un correo electrónico enviado desde un mail al que sólo tenían acceso los alumnos y las autoridades del colegio al que asistía Kira. En su contenido, sólo había dos palabras: “Muerte” y “Muere”.
A partir de ese momento, la familia denunció el hallazgo ante la Policía y se abrió una investigación al respecto. Desde ese entonces hasta la fecha, el instituto educativo siempre negó el acoso y, en marzo de este año, llegó a interponer una querella por difamación e injurias y en defensa de su honor por las acusaciones de los padres de Kira López.
Un vergonzante fallo de la Audiencia de Barcelona:
Luego de 18 meses del suicidio de la joven, la Audiencia de Barcelona ratificó que la decisión del juez instructor era archivar la causa, ya que “ninguna de las diligencias practicadas ha podido determinar qué llevó a Kira a suicidarse, ni puede su actuar autolítico ser vinculado a la acción de una persona ni a la inacción del centro escolar”. En este sentido, determinaron que daban por finalizada la investigación y advirtieron que “el suicidio de una joven de 15 años es devastador para los progenitores y para todos aquellos que la conocieron y la querían. Sin embargo, el ámbito penal no es el espacio oportuno para la búsqueda de consuelo o respuestas”.
Cuando la justicia no es justicia:
"Resulta lamentable y rayano en la inmoralidad que jueces de la Audiencia de Barcelona afirmen con relación al suicidio de Kira López: "Sin embargo, el ámbito penal no es el espacio oportuno para la búsqueda de consuelo o respuestas". ¿Qué están diciendo? ¿Invitan a los padres de Kira López a buscar justicia por sus propias manos y dar con los acosadores de su hija? ¿Leyeron los jueces el expediente? ¿Leyeron los correos en los que la banda de acosadores le decía a Kira: '¡muere!'? Demasiadas preguntas y una vida joven perdida para siempre. La bella Kira y sus padres no han tenido justicia ni respuestas, ni en el ámbito educativo de un colegio que tapa el bullying con un manto negro de soberbia y una justicia que 'está para otras cosas'. That day, the young girl jumped from the eighth floor of her apartment building as she was heading to class, falling into the stairwell. Her parents found her body later after reading a WhatsApp message in which she said goodbye to them and her other loved ones.
Kira was born on January 8, 2006, and grew up in Barcelona with her parents, María José and José Manuel López. She was a lively and friendly little girl. Her family remembers her as “a very loving child” who played with every child she met, as she found it easy to socialize.
As soon as she finished kindergarten and had to start primary school, her parents enrolled her at the Pare Manyanet school in Sant Andreu because all her friends went there, and since it had a good academic reputation, they saw no reason why it wouldn't be a good option for their daughter.
They forcibly cut her hair:
The bullying began in Kira's second year at school: she started coming home from school with bruises all over her body, her hair cut with scissors, and she was constantly threatened by her classmates.
"Tomorrow you're going to die because we're going to throw you down the stairs," they told her.
According to the López family, the aggressors were always the same, and they knew them by name because Kira always wrote their names in her school notebooks. The bullying was obvious, and despite her parents' repeated demands for action from the school administration, they always received the same response.
The school does nothing to stop the bullying of Kira:
“They told us nothing was wrong, that we were overprotective. We went from being ‘annoying parents’ to being ‘parents who complain all the time,’” said María José, Kira’s mother.
The school authorities continued with the same attitude and shifted the blame: “The school started pointing the finger at her because they said she didn’t know how to solve problems, manage her emotions, or stand up to others. And my daughter ended up believing it,” explained the mother.
The bullying of Kira worsens: As the years passed and she entered adolescence, Kira suffered the most severe bullying in the school. In a practical assignment that Kira had to do about school bullying, she decided to share how her experience with bullying completely changed her as a person.
Kira's parents demanded explanations from school authorities, but never received an answer about the bullies.
Bullying is never truly overcome:
One of the paragraphs in that report stated:
“The effects of bullying are never completely overcome; they end up shaping our personalities, like scars on our souls. Those of us who have been bullied always fear it will happen again; the fear lasts forever, even if we learn to hide it.”
May 19, 2021:
On May 19, 2021, the López family's life changed forever after a WhatsApp message Kira sent to her parents:
“Mom, Dad, I love you so much. You're the best, and I'm so sorry I did this. But I did it because I'm not enough and I never will be, and life isn't worth living. Come downstairs to see what I mean. Tell the rest of the family and my friends that I love them very much.”
Later, José Manuel López found his daughter's body at the bottom of the stairwell in their building. Initially, his first hypothesis was that someone had pushed her, but he couldn't imagine that all the pain his daughter had carried since she was a little girl had driven her to such a drastic decision.
Why? Between anguish and shock, both parents began searching for the "why" and decided to check her electronic devices, drawers, notebooks, and anything that might offer a clue. And on the ninth day, when they were about to abandon all hope, they discovered something that made them connect the dots: an email sent from an account accessible only to students and administrators at Kira's school. Its content consisted of only two words: "Death" and "Dies."
From that moment on, the family reported the discovery to the police, and an investigation was opened. Since then, the school has consistently denied the harassment and, in March of this year, filed a lawsuit for defamation and slander, defending its honor against the accusations made by Kira López's parents.
A shameful ruling by the Barcelona Provincial Court:
Eighteen months after the young woman's suicide, the Barcelona Provincial Court upheld the investigating judge's decision to close the case, stating that "none of the investigations carried out have been able to determine what led Kira to commit suicide, nor can her self-destructive act be linked to the actions of any individual or to the inaction of the school." In this regard, they determined that they were concluding the investigation and warned that “the suicide of a 15-year-old girl is devastating for her parents and for all those who knew and loved her. However, the criminal justice system is not the appropriate forum for seeking solace or answers.”
When justice is not justice:
"It is deplorable and bordering on immoral that judges of the Barcelona Provincial Court stated, regarding Kira López's suicide: 'However, the criminal justice system is not the appropriate forum for seeking solace or answers.' What are they saying? Are they encouraging Kira López's parents to take justice into their own hands and find their daughter's bullies? Did the judges read the case file? Did they read the emails in which the gang of bullies told Kira, 'Die!'? Too many questions and a young life lost forever. The beautiful Kira and her parents have received neither justice nor answers, not even within the educational system of a school that covers up bullying with a black veil of arrogance and a justice system that 'is for other things.' Bullying Without Borders was created to give visibility to these terrible injustices and try to redress them, but sometimes, the truth, reality, overwhelms us.
