La premier, Giorgia Meloni, consideró el episodio como una “ofensa no sólo para los creyentes”. El tema fue creciendo con el pasar de las horas y provocó reacciones también de parte del jefe de gobierno español, Pedro Sánchez, que condenó lo que consideró “un ataque injustificado a la libertad religiosa” y del presidente francés, Emmanuel Macron, que destacó que el incidente “se suma a la preocupante multiplicación de violaciones del estatuto de los Lugares Santos de Jerusalén”.
El comunicado del Patriarcado de Jerusalén:
Según un comunicado conjunto del Patriarcado latino de Jerusalén y la Custodia de Tierra Santa, todo ocurrió en la mañana de este domingo, cuando “la policía israelí impidió” que el cardenal Pizzaballa, jefe de la Iglesia Católica en Tierra Santa, junto con el Custodio, monseñor Francesco Ielpo, entraran a la iglesia del Santo Sepulcro, en la Ciudad Vieja de Jerusalén, cuando se dirigían a celebrar la misa del Domingo de Ramos, de forma privada.
“Ambos fueron interceptados en el camino, mientras se dirigían en privado y sin ningún tipo de procesión o acto ceremonial, y se vieron obligados a regresar. Como resultado, y por primera vez en siglos, los jefes de la Iglesia no pudieron celebrar la misa del Domingo de Ramos en la Iglesia del Santo Sepulcro”, denunció el comunicado.
“Este incidente sienta un grave precedente y atenta contra la sensibilidad de miles de millones de personas en todo el mundo que, durante esta semana, dirigen su mirada a Jerusalén”, subrayó el texto, que enseguida dio la vuelta al mundo y causó sendas reacciones en Italia.
“Los jefes de las Iglesias han actuado con plena responsabilidad y, desde el inicio de la guerra, han acatado todas las restricciones impuestas: se cancelaron las reuniones públicas, se prohibió la asistencia y se dispusieron los medios para transmitir las celebraciones a cientos de millones de fieles en todo el mundo”, también destacó.
“Impedir la entrada del cardenal y del custodio, quienes ostentan la máxima responsabilidad eclesiástica para la Iglesia Católica y los Santos Lugares, constituye una medida manifiestamente irrazonable y desproporcionada”, acusó.
“Esta decisión precipitada y fundamentalmente errónea, viciada por consideraciones inapropiadas, representa una desviación extrema de los principios básicos de razonabilidad, libertad de culto y respeto al statu quo”, remarcó.
“El Patriarcado Latino de Jerusalén y la Custodia de Tierra Santa expresan su profundo pesar a los fieles cristianos en Tierra Santa y en todo el mundo por la imposibilidad de orar en uno de los días más sagrados del calendario cristiano”, concluyó.

According to a joint statement from the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem and the Custody of the Holy Land, the incident occurred on Sunday morning when “Israeli police prevented” Cardinal Pizzaballa, head of the Catholic Church in the Holy Land, along with the Custos, Archbishop Francesco Ielpo, from entering the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem’s Old City. They were on their way to celebrate Palm Sunday Mass privately.
“Both were intercepted en route, while traveling privately and without any procession or ceremonial act, and were forced to turn back. As a result, and for the first time in centuries, the heads of the Church were unable to celebrate Palm Sunday Mass at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre,” the statement denounced.
“This incident sets a dangerous precedent and offends the sensibilities of billions of people worldwide who, this week, are focused on Jerusalem,” the statement emphasized. It quickly went viral and sparked strong reactions in Italy.
“The heads of the Churches have acted with full responsibility and, since the beginning of the war, have complied with all the imposed restrictions: public gatherings were canceled, attendance was prohibited, and arrangements were made to broadcast the celebrations to hundreds of millions of the faithful around the world,” it also noted.
“Preventing the Cardinal and the Custos, who hold the highest ecclesiastical authority for the Catholic Church and the Holy Places, from entering is a manifestly unreasonable and disproportionate measure,” it asserted.
“This hasty and fundamentally flawed decision, tainted by inappropriate considerations, represents an extreme departure from the basic principles of reasonableness, freedom of worship, and respect for the status quo,” he emphasized.
“The Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem and the Custody of the Holy Land express their deep regret to the Christian faithful in the Holy Land and throughout the world for the impossibility of praying on one of the holiest days of the Christian calendar,” he concluded.
