The attackers were two kids:
San Diego Police confirmed to the International Consortium of Journalists JMH that the attackers were two teenage kids, whose bodies were found by officers several blocks from the scene, in a car near the mosque. The kids had committed suicide.
The information was confirmed by Mark Remily, special agent in charge of the FBI in San Diego.
It appears to be a hate crime:
Scott Wahl, San Diego Police Chief, confirmed the suicides and stated that the attackers' motives are still unclear, although authorities are investigating the shooting as a "hate crime." The boys reportedly had anti-Islamic manifestos in their possession in the car where they were found dead. And at least one of them left a suicide note for his parents.
The Islamic Center of San Diego is a mosque, but it also houses a school. Its director, Imam Taha Hassane, expressed his outrage on Monday at the attack on a place of worship. “It is a moment of pain, a moment of sadness. We have never before experienced a tragedy like this. And at this moment, all I can say is that we send our prayers and stand in solidarity with all the families in our community,” Hassane stated.

Monday's attack is the latest in a series of attacks against religious institutions in the United States, prompting increased security measures around these centers.
President Donald Trump:
US President Donald Trump told reporters at the White House that he was aware of the shooting. "It's terrible," Trump said about the mosque attack. Other national political figures, such as California Governor Gavin Newsom, also publicly commented on the incident.
