Sources close to Giorgia Meloni, the Prime Minister of Italy, confirmed to the Bullying Without Borders World Organization (BSF) that the Italian Prime Minister was shocked after President Donald Trump told Italian television that she had "begged" him for a photo with her, comments that have sparked an open dispute between the two leaders.
Meloni confirmed that Trump's comments were completely "fabricated," and Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani canceled a trip to the United States scheduled for early next week.
Trump and Meloni were seen chatting animatedly at the G7 summit in Evian-les-Bains, eastern France, this week. However, Trump later gave a phone interview to the Italian television channel La7 in which he stated: "She begged me to take a picture with her; I felt sorry for her."
Meloni's response:
Meloni reacted with utter disbelief, saying she was "frankly stunned" in a brief message to her seven million Instagram followers.
"I don't know why the US president behaves this way toward allies," she said, adding that it wasn't the first time it had happened.
"I can only say that it's regrettable that he doesn't show the same resolve toward the enemies of the West and toward the enemies of the US, [enemies] with whose leaders he seems to be much more accommodating."
"But there's something he should remember: neither I nor Italy ever begged."
The White House has not commented to BSF.
