Retired Washington State Judge Beth Andrus, acting as arbitrator, ruled that Michelle Ritter committed defamation by falsely and maliciously accusing Schmidt of sexual assault, and noted that the 32-year-old woman did everything possible to avoid being questioned under oath about her rape allegations.
“Either her rape allegation was false, she knew it was false, and the deposition confirmed it,” Andrus wrote, “or Ritter was willing to make a false statement in exchange for $14 million and a $1 million payment to her parents…”
This referred to a declaration Ritter signed as part of a prior agreement with Schmidt, certifying that all contact with Schmidt was “fully consensual” and “never coerced or forced.”
The arbitrator ordered Michelle Ritter to pay Schmidt $10.7 million, a figure that will likely increase after his final decision in a few weeks.
