The JMH International Consortium of Journalists spoke with specialists in Sudan about this type of crime, under strict anonymity.
"In Sudan, tribal crimes generally involve bladed weapons (such as knives, machetes, and traditional daggers). The use of bladed weapons allows perpetrators to leave a lasting mark of horror on the victim, their family, and their neighbors. The aim is not always murder, but rather torture and extremely serious consequences, such as stabbing someone in the eyes so that they remain alive but blind and terrified for life. The attack we witnessed in Belfast, which may have been triggered by a simple disapproving look from Mr. Stephen Ogilvy toward the Sudanese assailant, bears all the hallmarks of this type of horrific crime," a military officer who has served in the wars in Sudan told the JMH Consortium.
