JMH International Consortium of Journalists — The victim of the alleged tribal crime in Sudan, perpetrated by a 30-year-old Sudanese man, is Stephen Ogilvy, a 40-year-old Irishman who was attacked, immobilized, and once on the ground, stabbed in the eyes, neck, and back. He is hospitalized in serious condition, has lost one eye, and may lose the other as well.
The attack in Belfast was a tribal crime: The JMH International Consortium of Journalists spoke with Sudanese specialists about this type of crime, under strict anonymity.
"In Sudan, tribal crimes generally involve bladed weapons (such as knives, machetes, and traditional daggers). The use of bladed weapons allows for a lasting mark of horror to be left on the victim, their family, and their neighbors. The aim is not always homicide, but rather torture and extremely serious consequences, such as stabbing the eyes so that a person is left alive but blind and terrified for life. The attack we have seen in Belfast, which may have been triggered by a simple disapproving look from Mr. Stephen Ogilvy towards the Sudanese aggressor, has all the characteristics of this type of horrific crime," a military officer who has served in the wars in Sudan told the JMH Consortium.
