米国の連邦保健当局は、メキシコ産のレタスが下痢などの消化器疾患を引き起こす寄生虫「サイクロスポラ（Cyclospora）」に汚染されていたことを確認した。
疫学調査の結果、米国5州のタコベル店舗で提供されたレタスがサイクロスポラ集団感染の感染源であることが判明した。米疾病対策センター（CDC）は、インディアナ州、ケンタッキー州、ミシガン州、オハイオ州、ウェストバージニア州のタコベル店舗で提供された刻みアイスバーグレタスを摂取しないよう消費者に勧告した。また、全米30州以上で過去最多となるサイクロスポラ感染例が報告されている。
CDCは「FDAは、汚染の可能性がある刻みアイスバーグレタスが他州を含め市場に流通しているかどうかを確認するため、供給業者と連携して調査を進めている」と説明した。また、「タコベルはFDAの流通経路調査で特定された供給業者からのレタスの使用を停止することを約束した」としている。
JMH国際ジャーナリスト連盟が入手した公式声明で、連邦保健当局は、調査の進展に伴い、他のブランド、レストラン、小売業者、流通経路が新たに特定される可能性があると明らかにした。
レストランチェーンに関連する食品由来感染症の発生は、多くの消費者に影響を及ぼし、公衆衛生上の重大な問題を引き起こす可能性がある。

Las autoridades sanitarias federales de Estados Unidos confirmaron que lechuga proveniente de México estaba contaminada con Cyclospora, un parásito que provoca diarrea y otras enfermedades gastrointestinales.
U.S. federal health authorities have confirmed that lettuce imported from Mexico was contaminated with Cyclospora, a parasite that causes diarrhea and other gastrointestinal illnesses.
"La FDA está trabajando con el proveedor de lechuga iceberg para determinar si aún permanece en el mercado producto potencialmente contaminado, incluso en otros estados", indicaron los CDC. "Taco Bell se ha comprometido a dejar de utilizar cualquier lechuga proveniente del proveedor identificado durante la investigación de trazabilidad realizada por la FDA".
En un comunicado oficial al que tuvo acceso el Consorcio Internacional de Periodistas JMH, las autoridades federales de salud señalaron que podrían identificarse otras marcas, restaurantes, comercios minoristas o canales de distribución conforme avance la investigación.
Los brotes de enfermedades transmitidas por alimentos en cadenas de restaurantes pueden afectar a un elevado número de consumidores y ocasionar problemas de salud de diversa gravedad.

U.S. federal health authorities have confirmed that lettuce imported from Mexico was contaminated with Cyclospora, a parasite that causes diarrhea and other gastrointestinal illnesses.
The epidemiological investigation identified lettuce served at Taco Bell restaurants in five states as the source of a widespread Cyclospora outbreak. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advised consumers not to eat chopped iceberg lettuce served at Taco Bell locations in Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and West Virginia. Officials also reported a record number of Cyclospora infections across more than 30 states.
"The FDA is working with the iceberg lettuce supplier to determine whether potentially contaminated chopped iceberg lettuce remains on the market, including in other states," the CDC said. "Taco Bell has committed to discontinuing the use of any lettuce supplied by the distributor identified through the FDA's traceback investigation."
In an official statement obtained by the JMH International Consortium of Journalists, federal health officials said additional brands, restaurants, retailers, or distribution channels could be identified as the investigation progresses.
Foodborne illness outbreaks involving restaurant chains can affect large numbers of customers and lead to significant public health consequences.
