Spain has ranked first for the second consecutive year in the global study on severe bullying cases conducted by the World Bullying Without Borders Organization (BSF), with 360,000 cases recorded during the period under review.
GENEVA, July 21 — World Bullying Without Borders Organization (BSF)
Spain has ranked first for the second consecutive year in the global study on severe bullying cases conducted by the World Bullying Without Borders Organization (BSF), with 360,000 cases recorded during the period under review. According to the organization, the Iberian nation reported more severe bullying cases than countries with substantially larger populations, including the United States, Mexico, Germany and Japan.
For Bullying Without Borders, the repetition of this result is not an isolated occurrence but rather evidence of a broader social and cultural phenomenon that calls for a thorough examination of the role played by the media, civil society organizations, businesses, public institutions and other influential sectors of society.
The organization says it has long maintained that bullying remains largely concealed in Spain. According to BSF, a number of associations and private organizations financed by major corporate interests have helped promote narratives that downplay the seriousness of bullying and discourage public recognition of its true scale. The organization compares that approach to campaigns conducted decades ago by sectors of the tobacco industry that denied the harmful effects of smoking despite overwhelming scientific evidence.
As an example of what it describes as this broader social climate, Bullying Without Borders points to the media coverage following the 2026 FIFA World Cup final between Spain and Argentina.
The organization cites headlines and expressions published by several Spanish news outlets, including "It is 2010 all over again and Spain keeps defeating evil in all its forms," "The poor sportsmanship of the nationalist winners," "They are disgusting," and "The outcome of the viral prank by a Spanish pilot who made passengers believe Argentina had won the World Cup."
According to BSF, such language goes beyond sporting rivalry and constitutes a form of public disparagement that encourages ridicule of opponents. The organization argues that this type of rhetoric reproduces mechanisms commonly associated with bullying by presenting public humiliation as a legitimate form of entertainment or confrontation.
BSF also questions the use of expressions such as "evil," "disgusting," or "nationalists" when employed as pejorative labels. In the organization's view, such language contributes to an atmosphere of hostility that is incompatible with responsible journalism and the social responsibility of the news media.
Within the same context, Bullying Without Borders refers to a video circulated online showing the pilot of a commercial aircraft announcing to passengers that Argentina had won the World Cup final before revealing moments later that Spain had actually become world champion. The organization maintains that the episode should not be dismissed as a harmless joke.
According to BSF, the pilot's conduct could constitute an alleged international offense against the safety of passengers, the flight crew and third parties, as it introduced unnecessary confusion during the operation of a commercial aircraft. The organization believes that the incident warrants a formal investigation to determine the responsibilities of both the pilot and the airline involved, as well as whether national and international aviation safety regulations were violated.
BSF argues that the seriousness of the episode lies in the fact that aviation safety requires every communication delivered by the flight crew to serve an operational purpose, avoiding messages capable of creating uncertainty or unnecessary emotional reactions among passengers.
The organization also recalls that, several months ago, Spain recorded a succession of four suicides involving adolescents between the ages of 14 and 17 which, according to information released in each case, were linked to bullying. The cases occurred in Benalmádena, Molina de Segura, Barcelona and Navarre.
According to BSF, that sequence represents one of the most dramatic manifestations of the problem and demonstrates that bullying can no longer be regarded as a minor conflict among students but rather as a form of violence capable of producing irreversible consequences for victims and their families.
Bullying Without Borders recalls that for many years it had to challenge the widespread belief that bullying was simply "a matter for children to resolve among themselves." According to the organization, that misconception left millions of children and adolescents without adequate protection by placing on victims the responsibility for confronting their aggressors.
"Experience has shown exactly the opposite," the organization states. "A victim of bullying, whether five, six or seventeen years old, must cope with loneliness, sadness and fear, the poisons that nourish bullying. Expecting that child or adolescent, in addition to carrying such an emotional burden, to confront one or several aggressors alone is incompatible with any serious standard of child protection."
On that basis, BSF says it has promoted a change in public understanding summarized in one of its principal institutional principles: "Bullying is a children's problem that must be solved by adults."
Nevertheless, the organization warns that achieving that objective becomes considerably more difficult when those who should contribute to preventing violence instead legitimize ridicule, humiliation and contempt through highly influential public platforms.
"When news organizations, public figures, professionals or companies portray humiliation as a harmless joke or as a cause for collective celebration, the message society receives is fundamentally incompatible with any serious policy aimed at preventing bullying," the organization said.
(Bullying Without Borders=BSF)
