He was scheduled to return to college after the holiday weekend to begin training for the upcoming football season, his father, Elmore Wonsley, told the JMH International Consortium of Journalists by telephone.
However, when the group returned to the mainland later that day, what had begun as a holiday celebration took a tragic turn: Wells was not with them. His family reported him missing on the night of July 4 after receiving a phone call from one of his friends at approximately 11:00 p.m.
Authorities launched an extensive search operation that ended in tragedy hours later. Officials reported recovering a body from the water near the shoreline matching Wells' description.
"There were no immediate signs of physical injuries," Bruce Lynd, Jackson County Coroner, told the JMH International Consortium of Journalists.
The investigation remains ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding his death.
