MADRID, July 27 – International Consortium of Journalists JMH — Spain is battling what authorities describe as the most devastating wildfires in its history, with about 80,000 hectares burned in the province of Ávila, representing nearly 10% of its total land area of 804,872 hectares.
The major wildfires affecting Ávila and the Madrid region remain active and are expected to continue burning for several more days. Emergency crews are focusing on protecting communities, carrying out preventive evacuations and preventing the two main fire fronts from merging completely.
Spain's Military Emergency Unit (UME) said the blazes have already merged intermittently in several areas and is coordinating operations as a single large wildfire. The government has also expanded the national emergency to the province of Toledo, where another wildfire that started in Almorox is advancing toward the Madrid region.
Across Ávila, Madrid and Toledo, nearly 97,000 hectares have been affected and more than 100,000 residents have been evacuated as a precaution, according to official figures.
"We are facing the largest and most aggressive wildfire in Spain's history," Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska said after a meeting of the national emergency coordination center.
Firefighting operations continue with the main objective of preventing the definitive merger of the Burgohondo wildfire in Ávila with the fire advancing from Madrid. Authorities said the outcome will largely depend on wind conditions, although weather on Sunday was slightly more favorable than in previous days.

MADRID, 27 de julio – Consorcio Internacional de Periodistas JMH — España enfrenta los incendios forestales más devastadores de su historia, con unas 80.000 hectáreas arrasadas en la provincia de Ávila, el equivalente a cerca del 10% de su superficie total, estimada en 804.872 hectáreas.

Los incendios que afectan a Ávila y a la Comunidad de Madrid continúan activos y las autoridades advirtieron que podrían permanecer fuera de control durante los próximos días. Los equipos de emergencia concentran sus esfuerzos en proteger a la población, realizar evacuaciones preventivas y evitar que los dos principales focos se unan de forma definitiva.
La Unidad Militar de Emergencias (UME) informó que ambos incendios ya se han conectado de manera intermitente en algunos sectores y coordina las operaciones como si se tratara de un único gran incendio. El Gobierno amplió además la emergencia nacional a la provincia de Toledo, donde un nuevo foco iniciado en Almorox avanza hacia la Comunidad de Madrid.
Entre Ávila, Madrid y Toledo, la superficie afectada asciende a unas 97.000 hectáreas y más de 100.000 personas han debido abandonar sus hogares de manera preventiva, según datos oficiales.
"Estamos enfrentando el incendio más importante y agresivo de la historia de España", declaró el ministro del Interior, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, tras una reunión del Centro de Coordinación Operativa (CECOD).
Las tareas de extinción continúan con el objetivo prioritario de impedir la fusión definitiva de los incendios originados en Burgohondo, Ávila, y en la Comunidad de Madrid. Las autoridades señalaron que la evolución del fuego dependerá en gran medida de las condiciones del viento, aunque la meteorología del domingo mostró una leve mejoría respecto de jornadas anteriores.
