A man armed with edged weapons attacked two people in separate incidents on Manhattan's Upper West Side on Thursday afternoon, New York Police Department (NYPD) Commissioner Jessica Tisch told the JMH International Consortium of Journalists.
Authorities identified the suspect as 51-year-old Raul Morales, who was taken into custody following a police search. Investigators are examining whether the attacks were motivated by bias, although Tisch said that "the preliminary investigation suggests that mental health may have been a contributing factor."
According to the commissioner, NYPD detectives are continuing to investigate the motive. Victims and witnesses told investigators that the suspect shouted "Allahu Akbar"—Arabic for "God is the Greatest"—during both attacks. However, authorities said there is currently no evidence linking Morales to Islamist terrorist organizations.
"The NYPD is currently assessing whether this constitutes a possible hate crime," Tisch said in a statement.
The first victim, a 57-year-old Asian man, was allegedly stabbed in the back near West 84th Street and Central Park West at about 1:30 p.m., police said.
The second victim, a 50-year-old man, was attacked shortly after leaving a synagogue at Amsterdam Avenue and West 86th Street. Police said he suffered a stab wound to the torso inflicted with a screwdriver.
Both victims were taken to Mount Sinai Morningside Hospital (formerly St. Luke's), where they were reported to be in stable condition.
Morales was arrested at about 2:45 p.m. after barricading himself inside an apartment in a New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) complex on Amsterdam Avenue near West 88th Street.
The investigation remains ongoing.

Según Tisch, detectives del NYPD continúan reuniendo pruebas para establecer el móvil. De acuerdo con los testimonios de víctimas y testigos, el sospechoso habría gritado "Allahu Akbar" —expresión árabe que significa "Dios es el más grande"— durante ambos ataques. No obstante, las autoridades indicaron que, por el momento, no existen elementos que permitan vincular al detenido con organizaciones terroristas islámicas.
"El NYPD está evaluando actualmente si se trata de un posible delito de odio", señaló la comisionada en un comunicado.
