At least 180 people have died (177 in Nepal and 3 in China), while approximately 650 remain missing after sudden and violent flooding along the Bhote Koshi River brought devastation and chaos to both sides of the border between Nepal and Tibet (China). Bridges, roads, and entire villages were destroyed.
Missing Persons:
Sources linked to Nepal's National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) confirmed to JMH that 384 tourists, 291 foreign nationals, and 93 Nepalese citizens are missing, along with 44 Army personnel, 28 police officers, 13 members of the Armed Police Force, and 60 workers from various hydropower projects.
Nepal's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Shishir Khanal, said preliminary indications suggest that an earthquake recorded earlier in the morning triggered a massive landslide that temporarily blocked the river's course in Tibetan territory before the accumulated water caused the catastrophic surge.
"There is enormous concern for the well-being of dozens of children from a nearby school who are not listed among the missing. We sincerely hope they are all safe," said Dr. Javier Miglino Helfenstein, Human Rights and Child Protection Expert.

El ministro de Asuntos Exteriores de Nepal, Shishir Khanal, señaló que los primeros indicios apuntan a un terremoto registrado por la mañana que habría provocado un gran deslizamiento de tierra que bloqueó temporalmente el cauce del río en territorio tibetano, antes de que la acumulación de agua desencadenara la crecida.
"Hay una enorme preocupación por la salud de decenas de niños de una escuela cercana que no están en la lista de desaparecidos. Ojalá que todos estén bien", dijo el Dr. Javier Miglino Helfenstein, Experto en Derechos Humanos y Protección de la Niñez.
