Two people have died in Michigan after suffering an intestinal illness associated with the microscopic parasite Cyclospora, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services said.

Two people have died in Michigan after suffering an intestinal illness associated with the microscopic parasite Cyclospora, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services said.

The two people may have experienced complications related to the intestinal illness and dehydration, according to health authorities.

Cyclospora is a microscopic parasite that infects the intestines and commonly causes watery diarrhea, marked by frequent and sometimes intense bowel movements. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says outbreaks tend to occur more frequently in late spring and summer.

The parasite spreads through fecal matter. In previous outbreaks, people have become infected after consuming fruits or vegetables that had been exposed to irrigation water contaminated with fecal matter.

Dr. Joel Kammeyer, chief of the Division of Infectious Diseases at Wayne State University and Detroit Medical Center, described the deaths as a “tragedy.”

Cyclosporiasis is less common than other foodborne illnesses, including salmonellosis and E. coli infections. Many cases are never linked to a specific food or other source.

For years, relatively few Cyclospora outbreaks were reported in the United States. The number began to rise about a decade ago, with particularly notable increases in 2018 and 2019.
