著名人や「国境なきいじめ撲滅世界機構（Bullying Without Borders）」、そして社会学者ジェイソン・アーダイ氏の友人らは、元ケンブリッジ大学教授だった同氏の死の前に行われたメディア報道について、公的な調査を求めている。
ケンブリッジ大学ホマートン・カレッジの学長であるロード・ウーリー氏は、アーダイ氏が「激しい魔女狩り」の対象になっていたと述べた。
「国境なきいじめ撲滅世界機構」世界代表のハビエル・ミグリノ・ヘルフェンスタイン博士も同様の見解を示した。
「ここ数週間、ジェイソンはソーシャルメディア上で、さまざまな理由から攻撃を受けていました。人種に関する問題、PlagScanやその他のシステムによって発見されたとされる盗用疑惑、個人的なスポーツ実績に関する虚偽、さらに団体への寄付金獲得に関する虚偽などです。すべての主張は、あくまで主張にすぎませんでした。証拠は存在せず、現在も存在していません。この種の嫌がらせは、2014年に私たちが作成したサイバーいじめの普遍的定義に照らせば、まさにサイバーいじめ、あるいはサイバー・ハラスメントに該当します」

この声明は、「責任ある報道をいかに確保するかについて、直ちに公的な調査を行うこと」を求めている。
41歳のアーダイ氏は、金曜日、ロンドン南部バタシーの住宅で死亡しているのが発見された。同氏は、盗用疑惑や一部の実績をめぐる疑問が浮上したことを受け、8月5日にケンブリッジ大学の教育社会学教授の職を辞任していた。本人はこれらの疑惑を否定していた。
2015年にアーダイ氏へ博士号を授与したリバプール・ジョン・ムーアズ大学は、同氏の研究に盗用はなかったと結論づけている。
論争が広がったのは、別の研究者であるネイサン・コフナス氏が、教授の研究に多数の盗用事例を発見したと主張したことがきっかけだった。コフナス氏は自らを「人種リアリスト」と称しており、2024年にケンブリッジ大学での職を解任されていた。
コフナス氏の契約は、「真の能力主義社会であれば、黒人はスポーツとエンターテインメントを除くほぼすべての高位職から姿を消すだろう」という趣旨の見解に強い批判が寄せられた後、打ち切られた。
ウーリー氏によると、アボット氏や社会活動家のミサン・ハリマン氏も、アーダイ氏を支援するために訪れた人々の中に含まれていた。彼ら自身も「ひどいメディア報道」にさらされた経験があったという。
ウーリー氏は、アーダイ氏が「嫌がらせを受けている」と感じており、絶え間なく続くメディア報道は「血なまぐさいスポーツ」のようだったと述べた。
「ダイアンは彼に話しかけ、手を握り、これを乗り越えるために私たちが力になると伝えました」とウーリー氏は付け加えた。
「しかし、その日、私たちが目にしたのは、体重が半分になり、言葉では言い表せない絶望に陥っていた男性でした」
ウーリー氏は、学術界では盗用問題が常に存在しており、盗用を告発された複数の人物が、アーダイ氏が受けたような注目を集めることはなかったと指摘した。
「私たちはこの問題に向き合わなければなりません。多くの人が話したがらないことについて話さなければならない。それは人種差別です。否定的な差別的扱いに目を向ける必要があります」
8月6日、ケンブリッジ大学はアーダイ氏の採用に関する独立調査を開始すると発表した。
ウィンドラッシュ・キャンペーンの活動家で、今回の請願書にも署名したサー・パトリック・バーノン氏が募金活動を開始したことを受け、アーダイ氏の家族のためにすでに9万ポンド以上が集まっている。
月曜日の午後には、反人種差別団体「Stand Up To Racism」が主催する追悼集会がトラファルガー広場で開かれる予定だ。

Personalidades públicas, la Organización Mundial Bullying Sin Fronteras y amigos del sociólogo Jason Arday han solicitado una investigación pública sobre la cobertura mediática que rodeó al exprofesor de Cambridge antes de su muerte.
Public figures, the World Organization Bullying Without Borders and friends of sociologist Jason Arday have called for a public inquiry into the media coverage surrounding the former Cambridge professor before his death.
En igual sentido se expresó el Dr. Javier Miglino Helfenstein, Director Mundial de Bullying Sin Fronteras: “En las últimas semanas, Jason había sido atacado en las redes sociales por diversos motivos: episodios raciales, acusaciones de plagio, supuestamente detectadas por PlagScan y otros sistemas, falsedad en logros deportivos personales y falsedad en la obtención de donaciones para entidades. Todas las acusaciones eran solo eso: acusaciones. No había pruebas y no las hay todavía. Ese tipo de acoso encuadra perfectamente en una situación de ciberbullying o ciberacoso según la definición universal de ciberbullying que creamos en 2014”.
El texto reclama una “investigación pública inmediata sobre cómo garantizar una prensa responsable”.
Arday, de 41 años, fue hallado muerto el viernes en un domicilio de Battersea, en el sur de Londres. Había dimitido de su cargo como profesor de sociología de la educación en Cambridge el 5 de agosto, tras surgir acusaciones de plagio y cuestionamientos sobre algunos de sus logros. Él había negado tales acusaciones.
La Universidad Liverpool John Moores —que otorgó a Arday su doctorado en 2015— concluyó que no había cometido plagio en sus trabajos.
La polémica estalló cuando otro académico —Nathan Cofnas, quien se autodefinía como “realista racial” y fue destituido de su puesto en Cambridge en 2024— afirmó haber encontrado numerosos casos de plagio en la obra del profesor. El contrato de Cofnas había sido rescindido tras la fuerte reacción negativa que provocó su opinión de que, en una verdadera meritocracia, las personas negras “desaparecerían de casi todos los puestos de alto nivel, salvo en el deporte y el entretenimiento”.
Lord Woolley comentó que Abbott y el activista social Misan Harriman se encontraban entre quienes acudieron a ofrecerle apoyo, ya que ellos también habían sufrido una “horrible atención mediática”.
Señaló que Arday se sentía “acosado” y que la incesante cobertura de los medios había sido como “un deporte sangriento”.
“Diane le habló, le tomó la mano y le dijo que le ayudarían a superar aquello”, añadió.
“Pero aquel día vimos a un hombre que había perdido la mitad de su peso corporal y que estaba sumido en una desesperación indescriptible”.
Lord Woolley señaló que los problemas de plagio son constantes en el ámbito académico y que varias personas acusadas de plagio no habían sido objeto de la atención que recibió Arday.
“Tenemos que plantearnos esta cuestión, tenemos que hablar de algo de lo que mucha gente no quiere hablar: el racismo. Hay que fijarse en el trato diferencial negativo”.
El 6 de agosto, Cambridge anunció una investigación independiente sobre el nombramiento de Arday.
Ya se han recaudado más de 90.000 libras para la familia de Arday, después de que Sir Patrick Vernon —activista de la campaña Windrush y también firmante de la petición— pusiera en marcha una iniciativa de recaudación de fondos.
El lunes por la tarde tendrá lugar una vigilia en Trafalgar Square, organizada por el grupo Stand Up To Racism.

Lord Woolley, director of Cambridge’s Homerton College, said Arday had been subjected to a “fierce witch-hunt”.
Dr. Javier Miglino Helfenstein, World Director of Bullying Without Borders, expressed a similar view: “In recent weeks, Jason had been attacked on social media for various reasons: racial incidents, allegations of plagiarism supposedly detected by PlagScan and other systems, false claims about personal sporting achievements and false claims regarding the obtaining of donations for organizations. All the allegations were just that: allegations. There was no evidence, and there still is none. This type of harassment fits perfectly into a situation of cyberbullying or cyber-harassment according to the universal definition of cyberbullying that we created in 2014.”
The text calls for an “immediate public inquiry into how to ensure responsible journalism”.
Arday, 41, was found dead on Friday at a property in Battersea, south London. He had resigned from his position as a professor of the sociology of education at Cambridge on August 5, following allegations of plagiarism and questions over some of his achievements. He had denied the allegations.
Liverpool John Moores University — which awarded Arday his doctorate in 2015 — concluded that he had not committed plagiarism in his work.
The controversy erupted when another academic, Nathan Cofnas, who described himself as a “racial realist” and was removed from his position at Cambridge in 2024, claimed to have found numerous instances of plagiarism in the professor’s work. Cofnas’s contract was terminated following the strong negative reaction to his view that, in a true meritocracy, Black people would “disappear from almost all high-level positions except in sport and entertainment”.
Lord Woolley said Abbott and social activist Misan Harriman were among those who came to offer Arday support, as they too had experienced “horrible media attention”.
He said Arday felt “harassed” and that the relentless media coverage had been like “a blood sport”.
“Diane spoke to him, took his hand and told him that they would help him get through it,” he added.
“But that day we saw a man who had lost half of his body weight and was plunged into indescribable despair.”
Lord Woolley said plagiarism problems were persistent in academia and that several people accused of plagiarism had not received the level of attention directed at Arday.
“We have to address this issue, we have to talk about something that many people do not want to talk about: racism. We need to look at the negative differential treatment.”
On August 6, Cambridge announced an independent investigation into Arday’s appointment.
More than £90,000 has already been raised for Arday’s family after Sir Patrick Vernon — a Windrush campaigner and also a signatory of the petition — launched a fundraising initiative.
A vigil will be held in Trafalgar Square on Monday afternoon, organized by the Stand Up To Racism group.
