The sudden rise in water levels left no chance to escape, and the devastating flood that struck Nepal on Wednesday has now claimed 366 lives.

The sudden rise in water levels left no chance to escape, and the devastating flood that struck Nepal on Wednesday has now claimed 366 lives. According to preliminary investigations by scientists, the catastrophe was caused by a huge fragment of glacier that broke away and temporarily dammed the Lhende Khola River, a tributary of the Bhote Koshi River. They suggested that this may have caused the accumulated water to surge downstream with tremendous force hours later.

Hundreds of people have lost their homes across the Himalayan region, while authorities reported extensive damage to critical infrastructure, including hydroelectric dams, roads, buildings and bridges in the region.

According to researchers from the climate research group based in Kathmandu, water levels in rivers in the flood-affected region rose by as much as 9 meters within 30 minutes as a result of glaciers breaking away upstream.

Climate change increases risks in the Himalayas

According to climate scientists, the Hindu Kush Himalaya is warming rapidly, causing major changes to glaciers, snow cover, permafrost and mountain slopes.

The mountains contain the largest volume of snow and ice outside the polar regions. More than 63,000 glaciers in the area feed at least 10 major Asian river systems and ensure food, water and energy security, as well as the livelihoods of billions of people.

However, around 78% of the glacier surface, located between 4,500 and 6,000 meters above sea level, is highly exposed to warming.
