Decenas de miles de personas se congregaron en Trafalgar Square, Londres, para recordar y rendir homenaje a Jason Arday, el exprofesor de Cambridge fallecido el viernes.
Tens of thousands of people gathered in Trafalgar Square, London, to remember and pay tribute to Jason Arday, the former Cambridge professor who died on Friday.
Arday, de 41 años, se quitó la vida después de que los servicios de emergencia acudieran a su domicilio en el sur de Londres el viernes. Había renunciado recientemente a su puesto como profesor de Sociología de la Educación en Cambridge, tras un intenso escrutinio público motivado por acusaciones de plagio —que él negó— e inconsistencias en las declaraciones sobre su trayectoria profesional y sus logros.
Se leyó un comunicado de la familia de Jason que decía: «La crueldad pública a la que fue sometido Jason era demasiado para que cualquier hombre pudiera soportarla. Las muestras de amor, apoyo y pesar recibidas desde su fallecimiento significan mucho para nosotros. Aunque ahora el sentimiento sea agridulce, la bondad es necesaria en vida, no solo tras la muerte».
“En las últimas semanas, Jason había sido atacado en las redes sociales por diversos motivos: episodios raciales, acusaciones de plagio, supuestamente detectadas por PlagScan y otros sistemas, falsedad en logros deportivos personales y falsedad en la obtención de donaciones para entidades. Todas las acusaciones eran solo eso: acusaciones. No había pruebas y no las hay todavía.
Ese tipo de acoso encuadra perfectamente en una situación de ciberbullying o ciberacoso según la definición universal de ciberbullying que creamos en 2014”, dijo el Dr. Javier Miglino, experto en Derechos Humanos y Protección de la Niñez y Director Mundial de Bullying Sin Fronteras.

Tens of thousands of people gathered in Trafalgar Square, London, to remember and pay tribute to Jason Arday, the former Cambridge professor who died on Friday.
According to the organization Stand Up to Racism, around 30,000 people gathered in the square to hear emotional speeches from lawmakers, friends and activists about Arday’s life and legacy, as well as to observe a minute of silence. Many attendees wore black or carried the Union Jack and brought flowers, which they placed at the foot of Nelson’s Column. Signs bearing the words “Rest in power” were also seen.
Arday, 41, died by suicide after emergency services attended his home in south London on Friday. He had recently resigned from his position as a professor of Sociology of Education at Cambridge following intense public scrutiny over allegations of plagiarism, which he denied, and inconsistencies in statements concerning his professional background and achievements.
A statement from Jason’s family was read out, saying: “The public cruelty to which Jason was subjected was too much for any man to endure. The expressions of love, support and grief we have received since his death mean a great deal to us. Although the feeling is bittersweet now, kindness is needed in life, not only after death.”
“In recent weeks, Jason had been targeted on social media for various reasons: racial incidents, allegations of plagiarism, allegedly detected by PlagScan and other systems, false claims regarding personal sporting achievements, and alleged falsehoods concerning the acquisition of donations for organizations. All of the allegations were just that: allegations. There was no evidence and there still is none.
That type of harassment fits perfectly into a situation of cyberbullying or online harassment under the universal definition of cyberbullying that we created in 2014,” said Dr. Javier Miglino, a human rights and child protection expert and World Director of Bullying Sin Fronteras.

この種の嫌がらせは、私たちが2014年に作成したサイバーブリングの世界共通定義に照らしても、まさにサイバーブリング、つまりオンライン上の嫌がらせに該当する状況です」と、人権および児童保護の専門家であり、Bullying Sin Fronterasの世界代表を務めるハビエル・ミグリノ博士は述べました。
