Agustín Añó es médico en la provincia de Mendoza, a unos 1.000 kilómetros de Buenos Aires. Tiene 46 años y, en sus ratos libres, ingresó con una camioneta 4x4 a la reserva natural de “El Leoncito”, provocando graves daños en el terreno. Según especialistas consultados por el Consorcio Internacional de Periodistas JMH, el daño podría llevar un siglo en ser revertido.
Agustín Añó is a physician in Mendoza Province, approximately 1,000 kilometers from Buenos Aires. He is 46 years old and, during his free time, entered the “El Leoncito” natural reserve with a 4x4 pickup truck, causing severe damage to the terrain. According to specialists consulted by the International Consortium of JMH Journalists, the damage could take a century to reverse.
Al no tener éxito, utilizó una escalera plegable como rampa para bajar de la camioneta una moto que permanecía en la parte trasera. La estructura de la escalera se enterró en el suelo. Con el vehículo de menor porte logró escapar, generando nuevos rastros en el sector.
Mediante un video de la municipalidad local se pudo acreditar el daño provocado por el paso de la camioneta del médico Añó.
Añó se encontraba acompañado de otro hombre. La titular de la camioneta es María del Carmen Valerio Barroso, una mujer mendocina domiciliada en Godoy Cruz, Mendoza.
El intendente Sebastián Carbajal señaló que las marcas de solo 10 centímetros pueden tardar entre 40 y 60 años en recuperarse naturalmente. En el caso de Añó, la profundidad de los daños en los surcos actuales podría tardar más de un siglo en desaparecer.
Quién es Agustín Añó
Añó tiene 46 años y trabaja como nefrólogo, dedicado al estudio, prevención, diagnóstico y tratamiento de las enfermedades y del funcionamiento de los riñones. Es exsubdirector asistencial del Hospital El Carmen, dependiente de OSEP (Obra Social de Empleados Públicos) de Mendoza, y estuvo a cargo del Servicio de Nefrología del nosocomio.
El médico Añó fue imputado por daño agravado en la causa que lleva adelante el juez de Calingasta, Andrés Troche.
El magistrado descartó que el imputado pueda excusarse en la falta de señalización o en el desconocimiento del carácter del predio, que es un patrimonio cultural protegido y cuenta con cartelería que lo indica en todos sus accesos.
El vehículo quedó bajo custodia de Gendarmería Nacional mientras avanzan las actuaciones. Por el momento, no fue removido de la zona para no profundizar el daño ya producido.

Agustín Añó is a physician in Mendoza Province, approximately 1,000 kilometers from Buenos Aires. He is 46 years old and, during his free time, entered the “El Leoncito” natural reserve with a 4x4 pickup truck, causing severe damage to the terrain. According to specialists consulted by the International Consortium of JMH Journalists, the damage could take a century to reverse.
Dr. Agustín Añó recklessly entered a restricted area of the Tigre mountain range, in Calingasta, with a 3,000-kilogram vehicle. He traveled more than 1.5 kilometers before becoming trapped by a suction effect in the clay soil. The physician attempted several maneuvers to escape. His Toyota Hilux left tracks up to 25 centimeters deep as he attempted to reverse between 200 and 300 meters.
After failing to get out, he used a folding ladder as a ramp to unload a motorcycle that was being carried in the rear of the pickup. The ladder structure became buried in the ground. He eventually escaped using the smaller vehicle, leaving additional tracks in the protected area.
A video recorded by the local municipality provided evidence of the damage caused by the passage of Añó’s pickup truck.
Añó was accompanied by another man. The registered owner of the pickup truck is María del Carmen Valerio Barroso, a woman from Mendoza who resides in Godoy Cruz, Mendoza.
Mayor Sebastián Carbajal said that tracks only 10 centimeters deep can take between 40 and 60 years to recover naturally. In Añó’s case, the depth of the damage in the existing tracks could take more than a century to disappear.
Who is Agustín Añó
Añó is 46 years old and works as a nephrologist, specializing in the study, prevention, diagnosis and treatment of kidney diseases and kidney function. He is a former deputy medical director of Hospital El Carmen, operated by OSEP (Social Security Organization for Public Employees) in Mendoza, and previously headed the hospital’s Nephrology Service.
Dr. Añó was charged with aggravated property damage in a case being handled by Calingasta Judge Andrés Troche.
The judge rejected the possibility that the defendant could excuse himself on the grounds of insufficient signage or lack of knowledge regarding the status of the site. The area is protected cultural heritage and signs indicating its protected status are posted at all entrances.
The vehicle was placed under the custody of Argentina’s National Gendarmerie while the proceedings continue. For the time being, it has not been removed from the area in order to avoid causing further damage.
