Fifteen people are missing in Grand Canyon National Park and dozens have been evacuated after parts of the canyon were hit by flash floods that swept large rocks, metal structures and other debris into the Colorado River, National Park Service (NPS) officials told the JMH Journalists Consortium on Sunday.
They found the body of one of the missing persons.
“Grand Canyon National Park staff, in coordination with the Arizona Department of Public Safety, continue evacuation and response efforts and are working to locate people who may have been in the affected area,” the NPS said in a statement obtained by JMH.
“Nearly all of the pedestrian bridges that crossed Bright Angel Creek were destroyed, eliminating foot access across the creek,” the NPS said in an earlier statement.
Authorities said Phantom Ranch, Bright Angel Campground, the Phantom Ranch Canteen, the North Kaibab Trail, the Black and Silver Bridges, as well as access to the Colorado River in the area, will remain closed “until further notice.” No reopening date was immediately available.

después de que partes del cañón sufrieran inundaciones repentinas que arrastraron grandes rocas, estructuras metálicas y otros escombros hacia el río Colorado, informaron las autoridades del Servicio de Parques Nacionales (NPS) este domingo al Consorcio de Periodistas JMH.
“El personal del Parque Nacional del Gran Cañón, en coordinación con el Departamento de Seguridad Pública de Arizona, continúa con las labores de evacuación y respuesta, y trabaja para localizar a las personas que pudieran haber estado en la zona afectada”, señaló el NPS en un comunicado al que accedió JMH.
“Casi todas las pasarelas peatonales que cruzaban el arroyo Bright Angel quedaron destruidas, lo que eliminó el acceso a pie a través del arroyo”, indicó el NPS en un comunicado anterior.
Las autoridades informaron que Phantom Ranch, el campamento Bright Angel, la cantina de Phantom Ranch, el sendero North Kaibab, los puentes Black y Silver, así como el acceso al río Colorado en la zona, permanecerán cerrados “hasta nuevo aviso”. No se dispuso de inmediato de una fecha de reapertura.
