El referéndum sobre la adhesión a la Unión Europea tuvo un resultado de 52,8% de los votantes por el “no” y 47,2% por el “sí”, informó la cadena pública RUV tras el escrutinio de la totalidad de los votos.
El país, de apenas 400.000 habitantes, solicitó su adhesión a la UE tras la crisis financiera de 2009, que devastó su economía, muy expuesta a las hipotecas subprime de Estados Unidos.
Pero las conversaciones se suspendieron en 2013, con la llegada al poder de un gobierno euroescéptico.
“Quiero ser absolutamente clara: este gobierno no retomará las negociaciones de adhesión durante esta legislatura”, que se prolongará hasta 2028, dijo en rueda de prensa la primera ministra islandesa, Kristrún Frostadóttir, quien era partidaria de reanudarlas.
Este rechazo no es “un revés”, sino “una victoria para la democracia”, agregó la dirigente socialdemócrata. Ocho de cada diez electores participaron en el referéndum, promovido por el gobierno.
El resultado negativo de la consulta congela cualquier discusión sobre una eventual adhesión al bloque al menos hasta 2028.

Iceland Says No to Europe
The referendum on joining the European Union resulted in 52.8% of voters rejecting membership and 47.2% supporting it, public broadcaster RUV reported after all the votes had been counted.
The country, with a population of just 400,000, applied to join the EU after the 2009 financial crisis, which devastated its economy, heavily exposed to U.S. subprime mortgages.
But the talks were suspended in 2013 after a Eurosceptic government came to power.
“I want to be absolutely clear: this government will not resume accession negotiations during this legislative term,” which will run until 2028, Icelandic Prime Minister Kristrún Frostadóttir said at a news conference. She had supported resuming the talks.
The rejection was not “a setback” but “a victory for democracy,” the Social Democratic leader added. Eight out of every ten voters took part in the government-backed referendum.
The negative result freezes any discussion of possible EU membership until at least 2028.
Iceland maintains close ties with the EU through its membership in the European Economic Area (EEA) and the Schengen free-movement area, relationships that will remain unchanged.
Fishing, which accounts for nearly 40% of the country’s exports, was one of the main points of friction during the campaign. Iceland wants to retain exclusive control over its fisheries rather than accept annual quotas set by Brussels, which had been willing to seek “creative solutions.”

人口わずか40万人のアイスランドは、米国のサブプライムローンへの依存度が高かった経済が壊滅的な打撃を受けた2009年の金融危機を受け、EU加盟を申請した。
しかし、2013年に欧州懐疑派の政権が発足すると、加盟交渉は中断された。
「明確に申し上げたい。この政府は、2028年まで続く今議会の任期中に加盟交渉を再開することはありません」と、アイスランドのクリストゥルン・フロスタドッティル首相は記者会見で述べた。首相は交渉再開を支持していた。
この否決は「後退」ではなく、「民主主義の勝利」だと、社会民主党の党首でもある首相は付け加えた。政府が実施した国民投票には、有権者の10人に8人が参加した。
