New data released this week in Spain, the United States, Japan and Argentina point to a common reality: suicide among adolescents and young people has become a major public health concern and requires determined action on prevention.

SPAIN

In Spain, the Ministry of Health is preparing a State Suicide Registry that will form part of a new Mental Health Surveillance System. The aim is to bring together health, statistical and forensic information in a standardized manner in order to identify risk factors, changes in trends and possible clusters of cases.

The existence of a specific registry is particularly important to prevent individual cases from becoming invisible. This was the situation in Bizkaia, where two suicides occurred within a 72-hour period. According to information highlighted by Bullying Sin Fronteras and Cadena SER, basic information about the affected minors, including their sex, the schools they attended or their identities, was not publicly available.

UNITED STATES

In the United States, the increase in suicide among girls and young adolescents is changing a long-standing pattern. For decades, suicide rates were considerably higher among males. However, the gap has narrowed sharply among younger adolescents.

New data show that among boys and girls aged 10 to 14, the suicide rate for boys was approximately twice that of girls in 2017. By 2024, the difference had narrowed to just 4 percent. During that period, the female suicide rate more than quadrupled, while the male rate nearly doubled.

The phenomenon is being examined in relation to multiple factors, including the digital environment and social media, as well as broader social, family and mental-health factors.

JAPAN

Japan is facing a similarly concerning situation among children and young people. A report released in connection with World Suicide Prevention Day said that 43,631 people were transported to hospitals in 2025 because of self-harm or suicide attempts, an average of approximately 120 people a day. The figure represented the seventh consecutive annual increase.

Japanese data also show a particularly strong concentration among younger generations. Cases involving people under 19 increased 2.6-fold between 2016 and 2024.

Concern also extends to student deaths. Japan's Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare reported 538 suicides among elementary, junior high and high school students in 2025, the highest figure since the statistic was first recorded in 1980.

ARGENTINA

In Argentina, the problem has a particularly critical dimension among adolescents and young adults. An analysis of official statistics published this week indicates that, since 2022, suicide has been the leading cause of death among people aged 15 to 24, surpassing homicides and even traffic accidents.

"The situations recorded in Spain, the United States, Japan and Argentina in relation to suicide among adolescents and young people differ from country to country, but they also share one common point: prevention must be strengthened. The best response to suicide is prevention.

Recently, the World Health Organization warned us about the multifactorial nature of suicide. It is no longer enough to assume that a pre-existing mental illness is involved. There are people with mental illnesses who do not die by suicide, and there are people who die by suicide without suffering from a mental illness.

It is necessary to work throughout the year on the early identification of risk situations, such as self-harm; to maintain follow-up of vulnerable people; and to strengthen family, educational, health-care and community support networks," said Dr. Javier Miglino Helfenstein, Worldwide Director of BSF.

New data released this week in Spain, the United States, Japan and Argentina point to a common reality: suicide among adolescents and young people has become a major public health concern and requires determined action on prevention.
