The return to school after the summer holidays once again places a recurring concern in Japan under the spotlight: the increase in suicides among children, adolescents and young people around the month of September.

The situation is particularly serious this year because Japan recorded 538 suicides among elementary, junior high and high school students in 2025, the highest figure since comparable statistics began to be compiled. Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare described the situation as serious.

For some students, returning to school does not simply mean the end of summer.

It can mean returning to an environment marked by relationship problems, isolation, academic pressure, family conflicts, personal difficulties or bullying situations that had temporarily been left behind during the holidays.

The situation in Japan shows why periods of transition at school require special attention. Sources within the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare confirmed to Bullying Sin Fronteras that child suicides tend to increase around the end of extended school holidays.

The figure of 538 students who died by suicide in 2025 is particularly concerning because it occurred against a different backdrop for the general population.

While Japan recorded 19,188 suicides in total in 2025, the lowest figure since the beginning of the national statistical series, the number involving students reached a record high.

Bullying, cyberbullying and trolls:

When a child or adolescent is attacked by the three silent killers — bullying, cyberbullying and trolls — and feels unable to escape a situation of harassment, isolation or humiliation, the possibility of asking for help can become decisive. For this reason, Bullying Sin Fronteras urges Japan to act before the situation reaches a critical point.

The BSF initiative — orange protective shields, created from an initiative inspired by Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama — moves in that direction.
