BSF warns that Japan is once again facing one of its most sensitive periods for suicide prevention among children and adolescents: the return to school after the summer holidays.
In general, according to studies by the World Health Organization and the World Bullying Without Borders Organization, student suicides tend to increase when the summer break ends and the school term begins again. A similar pattern has also been observed among university students at the beginning of the academic year.
The return to school brings together several pressures:
school demands return
bullying returns and cyberbullying intensifies
fear of academic failure returns
conflicts with classmates and teachers return
sunny days become less frequent
winter brings lower temperatures and shorter days
uncertainty becomes a reality
Worldwide, it is well established that the causes of suicide among children and adolescents are multiple and that, in many cases, there is no single explanation. The challenge is to identify signs of distress before a crisis becomes irreversible and to prevent it. That is the primary mission of Bullying Without Borders.
Japan's Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare has designated September 10 to 16 as Suicide Prevention Week and announced a nationwide campaign involving local governments, public agencies and private organizations.
"Japan has managed to significantly reduce the overall number of suicides in recent years, recording 19,188 total suicides, the lowest number since records began in 1980. However, in 2025, 538 elementary, junior high and high school students also died by suicide, the highest figure since comparable statistics began in 1980. This stark dichotomy has left specialists at the International Adolescent Suicide Observatory of Bullying Without Borders perplexed and forces us to intensify our efforts because BSF's primary mission is to prevent bullying, cyberbullying, mental illness and suicide, and that is what we work on 24 hours a day, 365 days a year," said Dr. Javier Miglino Helfenstein, Human Rights and Child Protection Expert and World Director of BSF.

BSF alerta que Japón enfrenta nuevamente uno de sus períodos más sensibles para la prevención del suicidio entre niños y adolescentes: el regreso a las aulas después de las vacaciones de verano.

En general, según estudios de la Organización Mundial de la Salud y la Organización Mundial Bullying Sin Fronteras, los suicidios entre estudiantes tienden a aumentar cuando termina el receso de verano y comienza nuevamente el período escolar. También se advierte de un patrón similar entre estudiantes universitarios al comienzo del año académico.
El regreso a clases concentra varias presiones:
vuelven las exigencias escolares
vuelve el bullying y se acrecienta el ciberbullying
vuelve el temor al fracaso escolar
vuelven los conflictos con compañeros y docentes
escasean los días de sol
el invierno trae consigo temperaturas bajas y días más cortos
la incertidumbre se torna real
A nivel mundial está acreditado que las causas del suicidio infantil y adolescente son múltiples y que, en numerosos casos, no existe una explicación única. El desafío consiste en identificar señales de sufrimiento antes de que una crisis se vuelva irreversible y prevenir. Esa es la misión primordial de Bullying Sin Fronteras.
El Ministerio de Salud, Trabajo y Bienestar Social de Japón estableció del 10 al 16 de septiembre la Semana de Prevención del Suicidio y anunció una campaña nacional que incluye gobiernos locales, organismos públicos y organizaciones privadas.

世界的に、子どもや青少年の自殺には複数の要因が存在し、多くの場合、単一の原因だけでは説明できないことが確認されている。重要なのは、危機が取り返しのつかない状況になる前に苦痛の兆候を見つけ、予防につなげることである。それこそが、Bullying Sin Fronterasの最も重要な使命である。
日本の厚生労働省は、9月10日から16日までを自殺予防週間と定め、地方自治体、公的機関、民間団体などが参加する全国的なキャンペーンを発表した。
