IN MEMORIAM

NEW YORK, September 29 — World Bullying Without Borders Organization

The suicide rate in New York City remained stable between 2015 and 2024, with 535 deaths recorded in the latter year. However, among Latinos living in neighborhoods with medium and high levels of poverty, the rate increased by 3.7%, and by 7.3% in neighborhoods with the highest levels of poverty, according to data released Tuesday by the New York City Department of Health and obtained by the World Bullying Without Borders Organization, a leader in suicide prevention.

Suicide Continues to Be a Serious Problem

Suicide continues to be one of the leading causes of violent death in New York City, rising from tenth place in 2000 to fifth place in 2023, according to a statement issued by the city's health agency in connection with Suicide Prevention Month.

Among Latinos overall, the period saw an average annual increase of 5%.

Between 2015 and 2024, the suicide rate among Latino youth was the highest of all racial and ethnic groups, followed by Black and White youth.

According to suicide data from the National Violent Death Reporting System in New York City, between 2015 and 2024, 62% of those who died had a documented mental health condition, such as depression, while 33% were receiving mental health or substance-use treatment at the time of their death.

The numbers also increased overall among men, by 2.7% annually between 2015 and 2022, while among women they decreased by 4.7%.

During that period, one in five people who died had a documented previous suicide attempt.

The Department of Health emphasized that these trends highlight the need for comprehensive, population-specific prevention measures that strengthen family and community connections, reduce the stigma and prejudice associated with seeking help, and ensure access to affordable mental health services for young New Yorkers as they transition into adulthood.
