South Korea: 17.5% of high school students considered suicide during the past year

A total of 17.5% of high school students in South Korea’s Chungcheongnam-do Province reported having suicidal thoughts during the past 12 months, according to a survey on adolescent mental health conducted by the Chungcheongnam-do Social Services Agency and reported this week by Yonhap News and the World Organization Bullying Without Borders.

The study surveyed 1,551 adolescents. Among students attending school, 248 said they had considered suicide during the past year.

Self-harm on the rise

The research also identified other risk indicators. 14.6% of students reported having engaged in self-harm during the past year; 3.7% said they had developed a specific suicide plan, and 1.7% reported having made a suicide attempt.

Academic pressure outweighs bullying

Among the 248 students who reported having suicidal thoughts, they cited anxiety related to their studies, career choices, employment or the future, as well as bullying, as contributing reasons.

High levels of stress in South Korea  

The deterioration in mental health was not limited to suicidal thoughts. According to the findings, 56.2% of students were classified as experiencing severe levels of stress and anxiety.

El 17,5% de los estudiantes de escuelas secundarias de la provincia surcoreana de Chungcheongnam-do declaró haber tenido pensamientos suicidas durante los últimos 12 meses, según una encuesta sobre salud mental adolescente realizada por la Agencia de Servicios Sociales de Chungcheongnam-do y difundida esta semana por Yonhap News y la Organización Mundial Bullying Sin Fronteras.

El estudio encuestó a 1.551 adolescentes. Entre los estudiantes escolarizados, 248 afirmaron haber pensado en suicidarse durante el último año.

Las autolesiones, en alza

La investigación también identificó otros indicadores de riesgo. El 14,6% de los estudiantes declaró haberse autolesionado durante el último año; el 3,7% dijo haber elaborado un plan suicida concreto y el 1,7% afirmó haber realizado un intento.

La presión académica supera al bullying

Entre los 248 estudiantes que dijeron haber tenido pensamientos suicidas, señalaron como motivo la ansiedad relacionada con los estudios, la elección de una carrera, el empleo o el futuro y el bullying.

Elevados niveles de estrés en Corea del Sur

El deterioro de la salud mental no se limitó a los pensamientos suicidas. Según los resultados, el 56,2% de los estudiantes fue clasificado dentro de un grupo de estrés severo y ansiedad.

학교생활에 대한 압박, 불링보다 크게 나타나

자살을 생각한 적이 있다고 답한 248명의 학생들은 학업, 진로 선택, 취업 또는 미래에 대한 불안과 함께 **불링(학교폭력)**을 주요 요인으로 언급했다.

한국 청소년의 높은 스트레스 수준

정신건강의 악화는 자살 생각에만 국한되지 않았다. 조사 결과 학생의 56.2%가 심각한 수준의 스트레스와 불안을 경험하는 집단으로 분류됐다.
