PARIS, September 12 — World Bullying Without Borders Organization
Joris Laurencin died by suicide in Châtonnay, Isère, in southeastern France. According to various accounts published by French media, he had been subjected to bullying, humiliation, racist insults and harassment within a group of young people from his community.
Authorities are now investigating whether psychological harassment, racist insults and other forms of violence may have been related to his death.
The preliminary investigation was opened on July 20 and includes, among other lines of inquiry, bullying, hazing, racist insults, repeated death threats on racial grounds, psychological harassment and incitement to suicide.
The story being reconstructed by his family is that of a young man who appeared to be integrated into his group of friends, but who may have endured for years situations that, according to different accounts, went far beyond a joke among classmates and former classmates.
The harassment related to his origin (Algeria) was continuous. According to his family, Joris eventually expressed rejection of the color of his skin: why is my skin dark? and concern about not looking sufficiently like the group he wanted to belong to.
His father began to wonder what was happening.
So did his sister.
But Joris continued saying that those young people were his friends.
Some former members of the group said Joris was the target of constant teasing, especially during parties and in Snapchat groups.
Cyberbullying:
Some of the incidents under investigation did not take place in a classroom but on phones.
Videos and conversations circulated among young people are now emerging as evidence that could help reconstruct the relationship between Joris and some of his peers.
Authorities have obtained access to some messages and videos showing racist insults and situations involving humiliation.
Joris left two letters that were handed over to the authorities.
According to his father's recollection, the letters referred to people who had been cruel to him, mentioned the racist insults and raised a question that now deeply affects his family:
“Why was I born?”
Loneliness, sadness and fear — the three poisons that feed bullying and can make it lethal — combined with cyberbullying, can have devastating consequences for a young person's life.

La investigación preliminar fue abierta el 20 de julio y contempla, entre otras hipótesis, bullying, novatadas, insultos racistas, amenazas reiteradas de muerte por motivos raciales, acoso psicológico e incitación al suicidio.
La historia que reconstruyen sus familiares es la de un joven que parecía integrado en su grupo de amigos, pero que habría soportado durante años situaciones que, según distintos testimonios, fueron mucho más allá de una broma entre compañeros y ex compañeros de clase.
El hostigamiento por su origen (Algeria), era continuo. Según manifestó su familia a BSF, Joris llegó a expresar rechazo hacia el color de su piel: ¿por qué tengo la piel oscura? y preocupación por no parecer suficientemente parecido al grupo al que quería pertenecer.
Su padre comenzó a preguntarse qué estaba ocurriendo.
Su hermana también.
Pero Joris continuaba diciendo que aquellos jóvenes eran sus amigos.
Algunos antiguos integrantes del grupo dijeron que Joris era objeto de burlas constantes, especialmente durante fiestas y en grupos de Snapchat.
El ciberbullying:
Parte de los episodios investigados no ocurrieron en un aula sino en los teléfonos.
Videos y conversaciones difundidas entre jóvenes aparecen ahora como elementos que podrían ayudar a reconstruir la relación entre Joris y algunos de sus compañeros.
