MONTEVIDEO, September 11 — World Organization Bullying Without Borders

Uruguay has the highest suicide rate in Hispanic America and practically doubles the rates recorded in countries such as Argentina, Brazil, Spain and France.

The devastating suicide rate in Uruguay stands at 19.16 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants.

Only Guyana and Suriname have higher rates than Uruguay, according to data from the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), with rates slightly above 20 per 100,000 inhabitants, or approximately 1 death for every 5,000 people.

According to its latest data, the average suicide rate across the entire continent, from Argentina to the United States, is 9.2 per 100,000 inhabitants, a figure that Uruguay more than doubles.

In a small country such as Uruguay, with barely 3 million inhabitants, 668 suicide deaths were recorded in 2025: 79% were men and 21% were women.

Suicide attempts

Suicide attempts are more frequent among adolescents, mostly girls, between 15 and 19 years of age.

Likewise, during the presentation of the annual report, Health Minister Cristina Lustemberg expressed concern about the 10-to-14 age group.

“Behind every number there is a person, there is a life trajectory that has been interrupted, there is a family and a community that has been deeply affected,” the minister said.

Experts from the International Multidisciplinary Team of Bullying Without Borders, in accordance with the guidelines of the World Health Organization, consider suicide to be a multifactorial phenomenon. However, in the case of Uruguay, a small country similar in size to Belgium and with historical origins that are closely linked to the European country, there are specific characteristics:

1. Loneliness

Loneliness, understood as a lack of connection with family and friends and a lack of support networks, is among the main reasons for psychological consultations in Uruguay.

To put this into perspective, loneliness is reported by one in three people in Uruguay, while the worldwide trend, according to WHO figures, is half that proportion: one in six.

2. Silence

Silence exists not only at a social level, but also among people who need help and their closest circle of family and friends, because there is still a stigma surrounding asking for help.

3. Access to mental health specialists

Uruguay has made progress in recognizing mental health as a right by incorporating psychological care into the public health system and developing various assistance programs. However, much remains to be done. Effective and free access to mental health specialists is still not available to the majority of Uruguayans.

4. Violence

Violence within the home, intimate-partner violence, bullying in educational institutions and cyberbullying are risk factors.

Child sexual abuse, which is present in Uruguay, is another factor that can affect mental health and increase the risk of self-harm and suicidal behavior.

5. Uncertainty

The future never arrives.

Uruguay is a country with a net population outflow. Its population has not grown since 1950. The majority of emigrants, numbering in the millions, live in Argentina, Brazil, Spain and the United States. In general, they do not return, leaving behind the perception that everything is out there, rather than here at home.

MONTEVIDEO, Septiembre 11 — Organización Mundial Bullying Sin Fronteras
