Xavier Amaya, a 17-year-old student at Franklin High School in Highland Park, jumped from the school's fourth floor in an apparent suicide due to bullying.

Xavier Amaya, a 17-year-old student at Franklin High School in Highland Park, jumped from the school's fourth floor in an apparent suicide. Xavier Amaya's family told the organization Bullying Without Borders (BSF) that the 17-year-old was being bullied and expressed concern regarding how he was treated in the days leading up to his death.

Amaya died on Wednesday after—according to police—he jumped from the fourth floor of a school building in an apparent suicide.

His parents said the school advised them to go to the hospital, even though his body was still at the school.

"The school didn't contact either the mother or the father; they found out under very, very sad circumstances. The mother was at the hospital thinking her son was there," said a woman at a vigil held at Franklin High School in Highland Park on Thursday night.

BSF spoke with a classmate who was in class with Xavier Amaya moments before he died. She said another student punched him several times before he fell.

"I was right behind them when it all happened. When I turned around, all I saw was the boy punching him over and over... The other boy was punching him, and he wasn't doing anything wrong."

BSF contacted the Los Angeles Unified School District to address the parents' concerns. In a statement, a district spokesperson expressed condolences and said the Los Angeles Police Department is investigating the incident, and that grief counselors are available to students and staff.

The school reopened on Thursday, but some students were not ready to return.

Meanwhile, the LAPD investigation into the tragedy continues. There are surveillance cameras throughout the school that may have captured what happened before Amaya's death on video; the case could shift to a homicide investigation if it is confirmed that the student was struck prior to the fall.
