BEND, Oregon, October 15, 2026 — WORLD ORGANIZATION BULLYING WITHOUT BORDERS
Four people, including three children and a teacher, were killed in a shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, on Thursday, according to reports from local authorities and Reuters. Two other victims, a seven-year-old student and a teacher, were critically injured.
The suspected gunman, a 16-year-old local resident, was also killed, authorities said.
Police received an emergency call shortly before 1 p.m. reporting gunfire near the school. Additional 911 calls indicated that an armed individual had entered the building and begun shooting.
Officers arrived within minutes. According to information presented at a police briefing, a community member confronted the gunman inside the school and shot him. Investigators are examining the circumstances surrounding the attack.
The elementary school serves children from kindergarten through fifth grade. Students and staff were evacuated, and authorities established a reunification site to help families reconnect with their children.
The tragedy has once again raised urgent questions about the safety of children in educational settings and the devastating consequences of violence within school communities.
BEYOND THE IMMEDIATE TRAGEDY
For Bullying Sin Fronteras, the distinction between school violence and bullying is essential. Although both can affect the safety and well-being of children, there is currently no verified evidence establishing that bullying motivated this shooting.
Investigators must determine the circumstances and possible motives behind the attack without speculation or unsupported conclusions.
Meanwhile, the incident underscores the importance of protecting students, strengthening prevention measures and ensuring access to psychological support for children, families and school personnel affected by traumatic events.
Children who experience violence need more than immediate protection. They also need sustained support, trusted adults and safe environments in which they can recover.
A CALL TO PROTECT CHILDREN
No child should have to fear for their life while attending school.
Bullying Sin Fronteras calls for sustained international attention to school safety, early intervention when threats emerge, and accessible mental health support for students and educators affected by violence.
Protecting children requires prevention, responsible institutional action and a commitment to ensuring that schools remain places of learning, dignity and safety.
