What are 'curis' in Spain? A new form of bullying and cyberbullying.

SPAIN: ANONYMOUS SOCIAL MEDIA ACCOUNTS TURN SCHOOL HUMOR INTO A NEW FORM OF CYBERBULLYING

MADRID, BARCELONA, GENEVA, BUENOS AIRES — OCTOBER 31, 2026

A new social media trend known as “curis” is spreading through Spanish schools, raising concerns about cyberbullying and the humiliation of students and teachers.

The accounts, mainly found on TikTok and Instagram, publish anonymous caricatures, memes and drawings depicting teachers and classmates. While some are harmless jokes, others contain humiliating comments about physical appearance, intelligence, sexual orientation and ethnic background.

The phenomenon has become so widespread that Spain's National Police issued a warning on October 23. Authorities stressed that anonymity does not protect those responsible from potential criminal or civil consequences.

School directors and specialists warn that these publications can turn everyday classroom conflicts into public humiliation, with consequences extending beyond school walls. The Mossos d'Esquadra have also called for stronger prevention and intervention.

BSF ALERT: A JOKE IS NOT ALWAYS A JOKE

When a person becomes the target of repeated public ridicule, the consequences can be serious. Schools, families and social media platforms must work together to identify abusive behavior before it develops into sustained harassment.

Digital anonymity must never become a license to humiliate.
