POLAND: SIX DEAD AND 15 INJURED IN SHOOTING IN KRAKÓW'S HISTORIC CITY CENTRE

The International Observatory for Security and Prevention of Bullying Sin Fronteras addresses a tragedy that once again places public protection and the prevention of violence at the forefront of international concern.

A day of extreme violence shook Kraków, southern Poland, on Saturday. A man opened fire on people near the city's historic Main Market Square, leaving six people dead and 15 injured, according to Polish authorities.

The attack took place at approximately 3 p.m. local time. According to preliminary investigations, the alleged attacker fired from a moving vehicle at people in one of the city's busiest tourist areas.

Police managed to intercept the suspect, a 24-year-old Polish citizen, who was injured during an exchange of gunfire and subsequently arrested. Authorities have stated that the motive for the attack has not yet been established.

BSF'S INTERNATIONAL OBSERVATORY FOR SECURITY AND PREVENTION: PREVENTION AS A PRIORITY

The tragedy in Kraków raises a fundamental question for contemporary societies: are security and prevention systems sufficiently prepared to anticipate and prevent episodes of extreme violence?

From the perspective of the International Observatory for Security and Prevention of Bullying Sin Fronteras, this incident deserves an analysis that goes beyond the immediate police response.

Protecting human life must remain a permanent priority. Prevention requires institutional coordination, the ability to identify risk situations at an early stage, effective emergency protocols and healthcare services prepared to respond to major incidents.

Responding after a tragedy is not enough. Public safety must also be built beforehand through sustained prevention policies, risk assessment and the protection of shared public spaces.

A TOURIST CITY BECOMES THE SCENE OF VIOLENCE

Kraków is one of Europe's most important historic cities and welcomes millions of visitors every year. Its Main Market Square is among Poland's most recognisable public spaces.

The fact that an attack of this nature occurred in an area heavily frequented by residents and tourists has heightened concerns about safety in public spaces.

Among those injured were police officers who intervened to stop the attacker.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk was immediately informed and travelled to Kraków. National and local authorities expressed their condolences to the victims' families.

PREVENTION ALSO MEANS SAVING LIVES

BSF's International Observatory for Security and Prevention places a fundamental issue at the centre of this tragedy, one that concerns every country: the need to transform prevention into a permanent public policy.

Security cannot depend exclusively on reacting to emergencies. It requires planning, institutional cooperation, training, investigation and the protection of citizens.

Six people lost their lives and another 15 were injured. Behind these figures are families, interrupted lives and a deeply shaken community.

Prevention cannot guarantee that every act of violence will be avoided. However, it remains an undeniable responsibility of societies and their institutions.
