La soledad, la tristeza y el miedo. Cuando el bullying se vuelve letal.

GINEBRA, Septiembre 6 — Organización Mundial Bullying Sin Fronteras

For a long time, bullying was treated as a wound of school life: a taunt, an insult, a humiliation, a fight that began and ended within the walls of a classroom.

GENEVA, September 6 — World Bullying Without Borders Organization

For a long time, bullying was treated as a wound of school life: a taunt, an insult, a humiliation, a fight that began and ended within the walls of a classroom.

But that story changed with the emergence of its three great poisons: loneliness, sadness and fear.

With the arrival of cyberbullying, harassment ceased to know schedules, borders or school doors. It can follow a child or teenager into their own bedroom, appear on a phone screen at midnight and continue while the world sleeps.

When these three elements take hold and persist over time, suffering can reach a devastating dimension.

According to the WHO, suicidal behavior is multifactorial. It may be related to mental health problems, family conflict, isolation, traumatic experiences, substance use and numerous individual and social factors.

But denying the importance of bullying and cyberbullying would be equally dangerous.

When scientific evidence repeatedly finds an association between victimization, psychological distress and indicators of suicide risk, the response cannot be indifference.

The World Bullying Without Borders Organization cross-referenced research and reports from Europe, China, Japan, Latin America and the United States, encompassing more than one million participants across the studies analyzed.

The picture that emerges is unequivocal: victimization through bullying and cyberbullying is associated with a higher risk of suicidal ideation, suicide planning and suicide attempts among children and adolescents.

Research distinguishes different levels of severity: suicidal thoughts, suicide plans, attempts and, in some cases, fatal consequences.

Argentina:

In Argentina, since 2022, suicide has been the leading cause of death among people aged 15 to 24, surpassing other traditionally predominant causes, including traffic accidents, according to Ministry of Health statistics.

China:

A longitudinal study of Chinese adolescents found that both involvement in bullying and cyberbullying victimization were associated with a higher risk of suicide attempts, even after taking factors such as depression, anxiety and stress into account.

Japan:

Japan is facing a record number of student suicides: 538. It is the highest number since records began.

United States, Europe and Latin America:

The United States, Western Europe and Latin America are facing a deterioration in adolescent mental health and growing concern over suicidal behavior among school-age children and young people.

Loneliness, sadness and fear

“When we discovered that loneliness, sadness and fear are the three poisons that can make bullying and cyberbullying lethal, many people called us alarmists.

But reality eventually struck us like an iron glove.

Bullying and cyberbullying are omnipresent. They do not end when the school bell rings. They continue at a birthday party, during a weekend, on vacation, at Christmas, during a World Cup or on any other occasion, 24 hours a day.

When a child or teenager is persistently subjected to humiliation, exclusion, threats or harassment, we are facing a situation that can seriously compromise their mental health, their safety and their life.

It is not merely a number. Behind every figure we verify at Bullying Without Borders, we find a story that did not have a chance to continue, a family searching for answers and a room that has been left empty and silent.

That is why we must act earlier and prevent.

A bullied teenager may not ask for help, but they need protection, they need someone to listen to them and they need someone to stand up for them.

Behind the silence there may be the loneliness of having no one to tell what is happening. The sadness of knowing that you are alone against the monster that kills in silence — bullying — and the fear of knowing that tomorrow... they will be waiting for me.”

(Bullying Sin Fronteras)
